“SING, SING, SWING!”

The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Jim Mair, will present “Sing, Sing, Swing!” in the orchestra‘s third concert of the season Friday evening, April 27th 7:30 p.m. at Unity on the Plaza, 707 West 47th Street.

The concert will headline the 18-piece orchestra performing new Big Band arrangements of classic swing music in a Tribute to the King of Swing, Benny Goodman. The evening will feature world renowned clarinetist and member of Goodman’s last working band Ken Peplowski and vocalist Kim Liggett. Kim Liggett is a former Kansas Citian.

The concert will headline the 18-piece orchestra performing Big Band arrangements of seasonal favorites. The evening will feature Duke Ellington’s scoring of THE NUTCRACKER SUITE. Former Kansas Citian, vocalist MICHELLE MILLER now making her home in New York City will be singing with the orchestra.

The concert will headline the 19-piece orchestra performing Big Band Classics made famous the Stan Kenton Orchestra. The evening will feature east coast vocalist Stephanie Nakasian singing arrangements especially written for Kenton’s favorite singer, June Christy. Saxophone virtuoso and Stan Kenton alumnus Kim Park will also be showcased.

The concert will headline the 18-piece orchestra performing Big Band Classics that are closely related to the Blues.  The evening will feature Los Angeles vocalist Ernie Andrews, New York Saxophonist Houston Person, and Kansas City B3 organist Everette DeVan.

“THE DUKE AND TWO DIVAS”

The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Jim Mair, will present “The Duke and Two Divas” in the orchestra’s second concert of the season Friday evening, April 29th 7:30 p.m.at Unity on the Plaza, 707 West 47th Street.

The concert will headline the 18- piece orchestra performing music from the Duke Ellington Songbook. April 29th is the birthday of Duke Ellington. Ellington would have been 106 years old. The evening will also showcase two of Kansas City's hottest singers, Ida McBeth and Angela Hagenbach.

By the time of his passing in 1974, songwriter, arranger, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington was considered amongst the world's greatest composers and musicians. He played for royalty and for the common people and by the end of his 50-year career, he had played over 20,000 performances worldwide and had recorded an estimated 2000 compositions. He received Honorary Doctorates from Yale and Harvard Universities and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His influence on American music and American culture is immeasurable.

Vocalist Ida McBeth does it all and does it all very well. She combines jazz, blues, gospel and a cabaret style that will set your soul on fire. She has performed at the Democratic National Convention and is a multiple winner of “Entertainer of the Year” awards in local print media. Angela Hagenbach, former fashion model has been electrifying the local audiences for the past decade and has also performed at jazz festivals and jazz clubs all over the world.

“IN THE SPIRIT OF COUNT BASIE”

The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Jim Mair, will present “In The Spirit of Count Basie” in the orchestra’s first concert of the season Friday evening, November 12th at Unity on the Plaza, 707 West 47th Street.

The concert will headline the 18-piece orchestra and two renowned Count Basie Orchestra alumni. Trumpeter/vocalist Clark Terry’s career in Jazz spans over six decades. He has performed at the White House for seven different Presidents, performed on every continent and at every major jazz festival in the world. He has received twelve Honorary Doctorates, recorded hundreds of albums and was the first African-American staff musician for NBC.

Drummer Harold Jones toured and recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra for five years. Upon leaving Basie, Harold joined Ella Fitzgerald on tour and stayed for several years. In 1980, he joined Sarah Vaughn and for the next 10 years toured with her around the world and made several recordings. In 1990, Harold joined Natalie Cole for the “Unforgettable Tour” playing to sold out houses everywhere.

Kansas City’s award winning vocalist and International Jazz Ambassador to Africa, Lisa Henry will also appear.

Combine the talents of Clark Terry, Harold Jones and Lisa Henry along with The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra and you have a one-of-a-kind concert – a musical extravaganza not to be missed.
